All About Bored Ape Yacht Club

Bored Ape Yacht Club is a project created on April 22, 2021. It consists of 10,000 NFTs on Ethereum, and they were inspired by HashMasks. It’s one of the only major NFT projects to gain mainstream adoption, with many celebrities owning one, like Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Brady, Madonna, and more. They are also one of the first NFT Projects that were used as Profile Pictures across social media platforms, especially Twitter.

BAYC is created by Yuga Labs, which started as a team of four pseudo-doxxed friends out of Miami, Florida: Gargamel, Gordon Goner, Emperor Tomato Ketchup, and No Sass.

They are one of the first NFT projects to promote utility through ownership via access to a club whose “benefits and offerings will increase over time.”

Some of the innovative offerings provided after the launch of BAYC was the ability to generate new Mutant Ape NFTs by drinking mutant serum NFTs. Additionally, you are entitled to receive a free Dog NFT, which they call the Bored Ape Kennel Club. Each are valuable NFTs that can be sold on secondary marketplaces.

Another benefit was receiving 10,094 APE coins, which could be exchanged for Ethereum directly.

A related Yuga Labs project, Otherside allowed ape holders to buy Otherdeeds using the ape coins that they were gifted – each Otherdeed could also be bought and sold on secondary marketplaces.

Since many early adopters of Bored Apes were naturally crypto-natives, some Bored Apes created utilities used by other NFT projects. Rarity Tools is one such example.

Bored Ape Yacht Club is here to stay. The future of their parent company is still unknown, but they are innovating and building with their ears to the ground of the NFT community. I will be looking forward to hearing about the new innovations and benefits BAYC holders will experience.
